Youth movement related to the Centre-right political Party PDL (People of Liberty) aims at striking off from the political Party all members with criminal records or who have been sentenced for Mafia; this is admirable.
The court of Appeal has sentenced Italian Senator Marcello Dell’Utri to 7 years’ jail for allegedly providing external support to Mob; as a result of this sentence, it is appropriate for a part of PDL making a profound political reflection without searching for conspiracy theories they may presume coming from the magistracy.
Giovane Italia’s President, Mauro La Mantia, representing the PDL’s Sicilian Youth has requested to expel all members who have been sentenced for Mafia, because he stated that it is not possible to undermine the credibility of a political party; he added that is important to follow the example of Judge Paolo Borsellino who was killed in Palermo by the Mafia in 1992.
PDL’s Caucus, however, are looking forward to the Supreme Court’s final appeal hoping for a verdict of acquittal. Even if the Prosecutor of Palermo asked for a 9 year verdict for Senator Dell’Utri, only 7 years have been confirmed on appeal, following the acquittal for all facts after 1992; these facts are related to recent releases of turncoat Gaspare Spatuzza regarding a deal between the State and the Mob after 1992 and Mafia-related slaughters that killed Judges Falcone and Borsellino in 1992.
A procession will be organised by Giovane Italia on 19th July to stress that Judge Borsellino is their hero, not Vittorio Mangano, as opposed to what stated by Dell’Utri.
This initiative would be the chance to see whether a new generation will be able to revalue a conservative political party who defined itself the party of the liberal revolution in 1994.
However some legislative initiatives raised serious doubts in some people’s mind.
The 1994 Biondi’s Decree (Biondi was the Minister of Justice at that time) eased the freeing of people sentenced for corruption towards house arrests (as per the case of Former Health Minister De Lorenzo) and the Alfano’s Law, ensures the immunity for Presidents of both Houses, Prime Minister, Ministers and the President of Republic.
This immunity came into force with timeliness during the Mills case where the Prime Minister was accused of corrutpion.
